Festival Circular es un proyecto de intervenciones artísticas en el espacio público creadas a partir de materiales encontrados y reutilizados. El festival pone además el foco en la contextualización de las obras y las actividades, propiciando que todas estén ligadas inequívocamente al lugar y al momento en el que se generan.
Circular se asocia con el arte urbano, pero se aleja premeditadamente del concepto mayoritario actual del mismo, en el que el muralismo de grandes dimensiones tiene un papel preponderante. El festival trata de contribuir a revertir este proceso que ha llevado a alejar el arte urbano de la escala humana, y devolverlo de alguna manera a ese estado.
El barrio de San Cristóbal de los Ángeles, en Villaverde (Madrid) es el lugar donde se desarrolla el festival, con un proceso de mediación previo con agentes sociales, así como con vecinas y vecinos, cuyo objetivo es conocer en profundidad el lugar y trabajar en él de manera conjunta y respetuosa. A través de reuniones, encuentros, lecturas, paseos, conversaciones y talleres se pone énfasis en el trabajo comunitario y en la creación artística contextual, aportando, de manera heterogénea, una serie relecturas del barrio y sus habitantes, poniendo en valor a personas e iniciativas claves en la historia y el día a día de Sancris, pero también poniendo en evidencia las carencias, los desagravios y las problemáticas de este territorio. Otro aspecto en el que incide Circular al llevarse a cabo en este lugar periférico es el de la descentralización de la cultura, la democratización del arte y el acercamiento de la creación artística arriesgada y singular a todo tipo de públicos.
Además, propiciando intervenciones realizadas con materiales encontrados, se aborda el debate acerca de la segunda vida de los objetos, el consumo responsable y el aprovechamiento de los recursos, reflexionando sobre la sostenibilidad y el papel que las personas juegan en la ciudad.
Madrid Street Art Project es el responsable curatorial y organizativo de Festival Circular, que en su primera edición (2019) también contó con la participación del comisario independiente Georg Zolchow. Tanto la primera como la tercera edición (2023) se han llevado a cabo gracias a una Ayuda del Área de Cultura del Ayuntamiento de Madrid; la segunda (2020) se llevó a cabo a través de una subvención de la Subdirección General de Gestión y Promoción Cultural de la Comunidad de Madrid. Durante todo este recorrido, Circular ha contado siempre con el inestimable apoyo de Cinesia, Centro de Innovación Vecinal y Desarrollo, la Asociación Vecinal La Unidad de San Cristóbal, así como sus vecinas y vecinos.

Circular is an art festival which produces artistic interventions in the public space, created with recycled and found materials. The festival also focuses on the contextualisation of the works and activities, ensuring that they are all unequivocally linked to the place and time in which they are generated.
The interventions are easily associated to street-art but at the same time want to stay way from how street-art is mainly conceived nowadays, where big murals have a dominant role. Circular aims to help to revert the process which has taken street-art far from human scale and somehow take it back there.
The neighbourhood of San Cristóbal de los Ángeles, in Villaverde (Madrid) is the place where the festival takes place, with a previous mediation process with social agents, as well as with neighbours, which allows both the organization and the artists to get to know the place in depth and work on it in a joint and respectful way. Through meetings, encounters, readings, walks, conversations and workshops, emphasis is placed on community work and contextual artistic creation, contributing, in a heterogeneous way, with a series of re-readings of the neighbourhood and its inhabitants, highlighting key people and initiatives in the history and daily life of Sancris, but also highlighting the shortcomings, grievances and problems of this territory. Another aspect Circular has an impact on by taking place in this peripheral location is the decentralisation of culture, the democratisation of art and taking risky and unique artistic creations to all kinds of audiences.
Besides, by promoting the use of found materials for the interventions, we launch the debate about a second life for objects, responsible consumption and leveraging of resources, focusing on sustainability, recycling and the role of people in our cities.
Festival Circular is curated and organized by Madrid Street Art Project. In its first edition (2019), it also included the participation of the independent curator Georg Zolchow.
